We prepare young people with Skills for Life.
Explorers are a go-getting group of young people aged 14 to 18. Together, they make up the fifth section of the Scouts.
They meet most weeks in groups called Units to try new things, make new friends and conquer the small task of learning new skills and making their mark on the world.
Being an Explorer is all about discovering what you can do on your own terms, making the most of what skills you have, and developing new ones
Alongside your friends, you’ll master the skills that will make you feel stronger and happier, and choose new things you’d never get the chance to do at home or at school.
Whether you’re hiking to faraway lands or building a robot in your local town hall, you’ll have the freedom to choose what you’d like to do, and work together with adults to make it happen.
The Young Leader Scheme is one of the most rewarding and exciting parts of the Explorer Scouts programme. It gives young people aged 14 to 18 the opportunity to support a younger section (Beavers, Cubs, or Scouts) while building leadership, teamwork, and communication skills that will last a lifetime.
A Young Leader might already be an Explorer Scout looking to take their first steps into leadership, or they might be a young person from outside Scouting working towards the volunteering section of their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
While anyone aged 14–18 can become a Young Leader, we strongly encourage joining an Explorer Unit alongside the role. Being part of a unit helps Young Leaders develop their confidence, enjoy adventurous activities, and gain valuable life skills that support their leadership journey.
There are several Units in Waltham Forest, and you can find more about them below.
